Week of January 20, 2020

This is a shortened week as we take Monday to observe and appreciate the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This week also marks the start of third quarter and second semester. Halfway, peeps!

This Week in AP Physics
On Tuesday and Wednesday we will complete our work on fluid flow and will take the unit 8 test on Thursday. Then from the cold of the early week we will heat things up alongside the weather forecast as we begin unit 9 on thermal physics. Caliente!

This Week in Physics
We will complete the formal lab report for the work-energy theorem experiment. As you write be sure to use the lab report writing guide and the lab report rubric to guide your work. Your reports are due printed (one per writing team) at the START of class on Wednesday. We will spend class time on Tuesday writing. Additionally, 11th period opted to take the
goal set 2 quiz on Tuesday, so please be prepared to take that at the start of class if you’re in 11th period. During the remainder of the week we will explore concepts and problems related to video 3 from unit 4 and will complete assignment 3 followed by goal set 3 and, time permitting, a quiz over goal set 3. Expect the unit test the week of January 27.

Week of January 13, 2020

This is the last week of second quarter. Any missing work is due no later than Tuesday, January 14 (unless you were absent for multiple days this past week.)

This Week in AP Physics
We will continue to swim through unit 8 on fluid mechanics. The first book assignment for unit 8 is due on Monday. The second one will be due on Tuesday, but you should wait to start it until we’ve finished taking notes on Monday. We will complete two labs this week, one on mass density and the other on buoyancy. By the end of the week we will explore fluid flow. Expect the unit 8 test by the middle of the week of January 20.

This Week in Physics
All resources for this week are available on our unit 4 webpage. This week we will perform an experiment on the work-energy theorem. We will complete assignment 2 and take a quiz over goal set 2. By the date announced in class please take notes on video 3.

Weeks of December 9 & December 16, 2019

Exams run December 18-19. Please check the schedule on our school website. You will take your exam as follows:
3rd period physics takes it 3rd period.
11th period physics takes it 11th period.
AP Physics takes the multiple choice 6th/7th and the FRQ 8th/9th.
Remember that the quarter does not end until January 17, so regular quarter grades will continue through that time.

These Weeks in Physics
You will complete videos 5 & 6, assignments 5 & 6, and goal sets 5 & 6. Expect your unit test toward the end of the week of December 9 or at the start of exam week.
Exam information: Your exam covers all content in units 1-3. The learning goal packets are your study guide. If you’ve lost yours you may print new ones on each unit’s web page.

These Weeks in AP Physics
For Monday please do the torque and rotation workbook pages 203-204 and 197-198. We will finish our unit notes on Monday. After (only after) finishing our lecture on Monday please watch the following videos from the outstanding resource Flipping Physics:
1.) Angular Momentum of Particles Introduction
2.) Common Point Particle Angular Momentum Triangle (a bit more complex than we need but helpful overall to show us the L = pR = mvR relationship)
3.) Rolling without Slipping Introduction and Demonstrations
On Tuesday you will do a rotational equilibrium lab and will then continue with a few more workbook pages and a packet of tremendously great problems. Expect the unit 6 test on or around Thursday. After that we will begin unit 7 on simple harmonic motion and will then prepare for the exam.

Weeks of November 25 and December 2, 2019

We are now entering the second half of second quarter, as the interim was Friday the 22nd. Exams are coming up on us fast, so you might want to use a little time over Thanksgiving break to brush up on past topics. Exams take place December 18-20.

This assignment blog covers two weeks because of the amazing Thanksgiving vacation we’re about to have. Enjoy your time off! 🙂

These Weeks in AP Physics
For Monday 11/25 do pages 62-64 in the new workbook. We will cover circular motion and do additional workbook pages, tremendously great problems, and a SUPER fun lab. After that we’ll take a spin into the topic of rotational motion and torque. We’ll follow the usual routine with that. Scavenger hunt! There is an Easter egg relevant to our current topic somewhere on my website. See if you can find it!

These Weeks in Physics
On Monday 11/25 we will take a big quiz over goal set 1, so be sure to prepare well for that. This quiz will be worth twice the points of a normal quiz. Goal set 2 is due on Monday for 3rd period, and we will take a quiz over it on Tuesday. Eleventh period will take the goal set 2 quiz after break. (Remember we missed Friday’s class due to the pep rally.) We will also do a lab on friction. When announced please take notes on video 3 from unit 3. We will go over it in class and will complete assignment 3, goal set 3, and take a quiz.

Meet the Balloonatics! This is the team of people who engineer the balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, and believe it or not, they use PHYSICS…some of the same physics we’ve been learning, in fact! Here’s a short video from Science Friday that shows you how it’s done! Below the video I’ve included the science of cranberries, which I think is really cool. The science of CRANBERRIES! I don’t know about you, but I LOVE to make homemade cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving. Did you know that cranberries are grown in BOGS? They’re grown on vines like strawberries, but they thrive if those vines are planted in wetlands. That’s cool. Also, 60% of our cranberries come from Wisconsin, while 25% come from Massachusetts, and if you have the chance to head out to those states, you can go to a cranberry farm (like we go to blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry farms here.) Here’s a little more information and an awesome picture!

Week of November 18, 2019

This Week in AP Physics
For Monday please do workbook pages 137-143 and page 150. For Tuesday please do pages 151-152 and 155-156. For Wednesday please do pages 153-154, and we may or may not do pages 161-163, so stay tuned on those last ones. This week we will complete a small set of tremendously great problems and will do our final lab for the momentum unit. Expect a test Thursday. Next up: circular and rotational motion.

This Week in Physics
For Monday please take notes on
video two from unit 3. As announced in your class period there will be a quiz over learning goals set 1. This week we will cover friction with assignment 2 and possibly a lab (more likely for third period based on when double period labs fall. Eleventh will possibly do the lab next week.)

Week of November 11, 2019

This Week in AP Physics
We will continue to explore the topics related to
momentum in unit five. For Monday please complete the first packet of tremendously great problems. Beginning on Monday we will cover the conservation of momentum in closed systems through notes, another experiment, and more tremendously great problems and workbook pages. By the end of the week we will start looking at the role of energy in collisions, which is the last phase of this unit. Expect a unit test during the week of November 18. Test corrections for the unit four test are due by Thursday at 3:00, and your impulse-momentum theorem lab report is due by the start of class on Thursday. (Your revenge will be my burial in grading.) Be sure to use the Lab Report Writing Guide and Lab Report Rubric to guide your writing.

This Week in Physics
Please read the assignments for your class period. We may not get to all of this during this week, but it will be fun to try!
3rd period: Your human cannonball lab is due on Monday. We will continue to debrief
video one from unit three and will begin assignment 1 in class followed by a quiz over goal set one as announced. By the date assigned in class, please take notes on video two from unit three covering friction. We will complete an experiment and assignment 2 in class.
11th period: On Monday we will complete the human cannonball experiment and will likely work on that during class on Tuesday, as well. On Tuesday and Wednesday we will continue to debrief
video one from unit three and will complete assignment 1 in class followed by a quiz over goal set one as announced. By the date assigned in class, please take notes on video two from unit three covering friction. We will complete an experiment and assignment 2 in class.

Week of November 4, 2019

This Week in AP Physics
We will continue to explore
unit five on momentum. We will complete three experiments and will continue our routine of tremendously great problems, workbook, and AP Classroom resources. I’d like to share a few new resources for you, some of which you’ve seen already.
Flipping Physics is a fantastic resource of AP Physics videos.
Bozeman Science has a deep library of videos, as well.
OpenStax has a quality, free online AP Physics textbook (that your teacher helped edit!)

This Week in Physics
On Monday you will take your
unit two test over two-dimensional motion. For Tuesday (11th period) or Wednesday (3rd period) please take notes over the first video from unit three. We will go over these videos, do enrichment, and complete assignment 1 together in class. When announced, please take notes over video two from unit three.

Week of October 28, 2019

This week marks the start of second quarter… yay!

This Week in AP Physics
We will complete
unit four on energy ideally by Monday to test on Tuesday, but let’s get real. I’m probably overly optimistic as usual, so the test may be Wednesday. We’ll also begin unit five on momentum this week.Guess what we’ll do in unit five! Notes, tremendously great problems, workbook pages, AND three experiments! SO GOOD! To help you prepare for the unit 4 test, the progress checks are now visible on AP Classroom. There are two sets of multiple choice and one set of FRQs. No points will be awarded for doing these, but they are available to help you. Let me know if you’re stuck on any, and we can take a look at them.

This Week in Physics
On Monday we will complete
assignment 4 on upwardly-launched projectiles together in class. We will take a quiz over projectiles (goal set 2) on Tuesday, and on Tuesday into Wednesday we’ll complete an experiment on projectile motion. Our unit 2 test will be on Thursday. Next week: The *force* will be with us!

Week of October 21, 2019

This is the last week of the quarter. No late assignments (other than those due because of absences in the past week) will be accepted at this point. Let’s do a great job this week and finish strong! 🙂

This Week in AP Physics
We will explore conservative and non conservative work and will then do a lot with a major topic, the conservation of mechanical energy for closed systems. Time permitting we will also cover power. As always, expect some tremendously great problems and some workbook pages in small batches. Your lab report for the
Work-Energy Theorem experiment is due on Friday, October 25. (Remember to use the Lab Report Writing Guide and Lab Report Rubric when writing your report.) Expect the unit 4 test next week. Woot!

This Week in Physics
We will cover the quantitative analysis of projectiles and will do
assignments 3 & 4 from unit 3. If you have not yet taken notes from video 3 and video 4 from unit 2 you should do so for Monday by the start of class. Time permitting we will complete our experiment on projectile motion this week. Expect a test next week.

Week of October 14, 2019

This is the second-to-last week in the first quarter. All missing work (other than work due to absences that take place between this week and next) is due on Friday, October 18 if you would like to receive late credit.

On Wednesday we will not have class together due to PSAT testing.

Fun fact: The Nobel Prize in Physics 2019 was awarded this past week!

This Week in AP Physics
We will continue to work (pun intended) with the concept of energy and will cover the work-energy theorem and conservation of mechanical energy. Expect AP workbook pages, some tremendously great problems, and a lab over the
Work-Energy Theorem. A formal lab report for this lab will be due one week after we complete it. (Remember to use the Lab Report Writing Guide and Lab Report Rubric when writing your report.) Finally, corrections for your unit 3 test are due on Thursday, October 17.

This Week in Physics
Third period: On Monday we will go over vector resolution to prepare for a quiz on Tuesday.
Video 3 and video 4 from unit 2 will be due as announced. We will go outside to do a lab if the weather permits. By the end of the week we *may* begin assignment 3 from unit 3.
Eleventh period: On Monday we will go over
assignment 1 from unit 3 and will work in a couple of extra vector addition practice problems so that you will be ready to take a quiz over vector addition on Tuesday. By Tuesday be sure to have taken notes over video 2 from unit 2. We will begin to cover this on Monday and will complete assignment 2 plus additional practice problems. Watch for a quiz over vector resolution to be announced for Thursday. By the date announced in class please be sure to take notes over video 3 and video 4 from unit 2.
